Friends and Freedom: What New Students Have to Say

As we begin the 2019-2020 school year, we have continued last year’s remarkable pace of enrolling new students! We talked to several of them to collect their thoughts on joining Fairhaven School. As you can see from the following quotes from our newest members, if you are considering enrolling your child, you can expect them to soon enjoy “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

“I would recommend Fairhaven School. The people are very nice, and it’s really easy to make friends
here. There’s also a lot of space to run.”

“I don’t get in trouble here every day like I did in my old school. I like the Shop and the Art Room. The
staff here are much better than my old teacher. She threatened to call the cops if we touched her stuff!”

“It’s like homeschooling, but I get to interact with people here. I feel way more motivated to come in
and see people. We do art together.”

“For me, it’s freedom—you can go to the bathroom without first raising your hand. Fairhaven gives me more time to do anything I want to do. I’m open here—to try anything, talk to anyone, go anywhere.”

“The school feels very welcoming. When I wake up, I’m looking forward to going, unlike last year. I like the sense of freedom and not being forced to sit down all day and copy notes off a whiteboard. I also enjoy being outside.”

“My peers here are super nice. In middle school, things are really weird socially, but it’s been a lot better here. I’ve made lots of friends here, and we hang out after school, too.”

“It’s really unique here. You actually pursue something you want to do! I can talk to anybody any time, instead of barely having any time to be with my friends. Fairhaven is exciting—you know what you’re going to do, but you can always do something else.”

The one thing that makes my job as a staff member at Fairhaven School interesting and challenging is that it offers an ever-changing kaleidoscope of experiences. No day is ever quite the same as the one before, because the infinite potential of human creativity is unfolding before me on a daily basis. My son was comparing Fairhaven to the public school he attended until he was eight. “You know,” he said, “when I went to my old school, I was always doing things because someone told me to. I did things to make my teachers happy, or to get someone to like me, or to be like everyone else. At Fairhaven I do things for myself, and I don’t have to worry about what other people think.”

Since we first opened our doors, we have spent hundreds of hours playing kickball. This year, however, tension caused by players trash-talking, disagreements about rules, and a general malaise descending on the game threatened its existence. How the players addressed these issues exemplifies problem solving at Sudbury schools, and might concretize how our community functions.

Presence

Perhaps more than any other quality, presence defines Fairhaven’s students.
